American Tapestry Alliance, through their Facebook “Let’s Talk About Tapestry” group, periodically posts themes to generate conversation among its far flung members. The theme for May 2019 is about sampling: “Do you sample? If so, why and how do you go about it?
Here is my answer: I have been learning how to weave Hebrew words/phrases into some of my tapestries. The attached photo of Shema O Israel, is a good example of sampling for me: a) small size; b) composite design of fractured glass pieces with the text; c) the fractured glass pieces actually represent the sound of the shofar; d) the decision to showcase this with the text horizontally or vertically; e) the rugged look of the red background color vs. the muted yellow (sound of the shofar) and green (the text) look as if they are disappearing into the red background; and f) what is the real message I am trying to communicate? The next decision is whether I recreate this design on a larger scale or not. This measures 9″w x 17.5″l.
Here is another sampler that spells Hallelujah: I wanted to see which colors pop up or fade into a background color to determine the value relationships. I also need to continue practice weaving letters.
