Catskilled Crafters COATS OF MANY COLORS Project JOSEPH’S COAT OF MANY COLORS, (c) 2022 Handwoven, Scripture, 51″w x 45″l
The wools used in this Coat are both commercially spun and dyed, and Shetland wools I have dyed and spun. I purposely am using the Rainbow sequence as this reflects God’s rainbow promise for Noah. I am calling this JOSEPH’S COAT, who was born several generations post Noah, and was Jacob’s 11th son and favorite son (perhaps, Jacob considered Joseph to be a visible sign of God’s continued promise). The coat is blood stained. as his brothers showed to their father Jacob to convince Jacob Joseph was dead, and not to let Jacob know they sold Joseph to Ishmaelites as a slave.
This coat is woven in rectangular panels: sleeves; back; and two front panels, these latter overlap in the front and have hand made ceramic buttons by Solveig Comer. The adult size of this garment hint at an ambiguity of is this oversized coat for a favorite child?! Thanks to Pamela Martin who provided excellent seam sewing tips.
